Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Every night while everyone lays in bed I read a few chapters of a book. We’ve read…I don’t know how many books. And it all started with Hugo Cabret (we’ll have to do a review of that book!) over 3 years ago. The day is not complete if we don’t have our reading time and we are almost always on the edge of our beds waiting to know what will happen next. Each night the chant goes up, “Don’t stop Mom! Keep reading!!”
We started the Percy Jackson books back at the beginning of the summer and swept through them by the time school started. The series is one of the kids’ favorites. It’s a five book series with great comedy, mixed with facts about Greek mythology, and fun dialogue. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and at the same time has some pretty intense scenes. I would say that this is geared more toward the 5th grade level of reading because of the social and friendship scenarios that arise. Some of it may be over younger children’s comprehension. It does allow for some great conversations while reading.
This is a series about how to be a loyal friend, the power of believing in someone, redemption, and overpowering the forces that were trying to destroy others.
Since we read this as a family all of the kids are going to share their review. It was chosen by Gracie, though.
Percy Jackson Book Review:
The quick low down:
Percy is a boy who finds out that he’s the son of an Olympian God. This new knowledge explains many of the crazy situations he’s been in through out his life. He also discovers a special school, Camp Half Blood, and friends who are like him. Together they go on many adventures to save mankind.
Your favorite character…
Grace: Annabeth and Tyson. Annabeth because she is super smart and she can figure out hard stuff. And her hat makes her invisible. That’s awesome! Tyson because he’s funny and very sweet.
Emmett: Percy and Luke. Percy because he’s just freakin’ awesome! And he has a pen that turns into a sword. Luke because…well I can’t really tell if you’re going to read the book…
Miriam: Blackjack. He’s hilarious and he’s a Pegasus.
Emma: Annabeth. Because she’s smart and mature.
Your favorite book of the series…
Grace: The Last Olympian. I like all of them…it’s so hard to choose!
Emmett: The Last Olympian. Percy goes through some pretty awesome stuff that is pretty sick and I really like the way it ends.
Miriam: The Battle of the Labryinth. I liked the way they were in the Labryinth and then they would come out in random places and not know how long they had been in there.
Emma: The Last Olympian. There’s the war, Kronos gets what’s coming to him, and at the same time my heart is sad for one of the characters. I like all of that.
Creepiest Character:
Miriam: Luke’s mom.
Emma: Kronos.
What kind of person would like this series?
Grace: Someone who likes an intense story!!
Out of 5 yellow houses I give this series:

Thanks for this review! I’ve been wondering if these would be something my girls would be interested in!
When we read these books I’d say that Grace (7yo) caught about 75% of the humor and dialogue. My 10yo girls caught about 90% and, of course, Emmett (14yo) loved them.
I am listening to the First, lightening thief as I grade papers! Love it! I will come back later with my favorite character!
Can’t wait to hear who your fave character is!
Just wanted to say you have a great site and thanks for posting!…
Thanks, Brian!
