it’s all about the hunt…and the treasure at the end… charlotte family photographer
Calling all pirates! charlotte family photographer
If you’ve not been geocaching you’re missing out on all of the fun! There are places to explore and lands to get lost in that you would have never experienced if it weren’t for a little handdheld GPS. It’s all about the hunt…and the chance to search under rocks and branches and trees for…you’re not sure what. But there IS treasure at the end. charlotte family photographer
Geocaching 101:
Go to: geocaching.com
Enter your zipcode the world of geocaching will open up to you.
Search the list for a geocache that sounds fun and take your compass and try to find it.
OR
Download the app and use your phone (I highly recommend this option…trust me…your compass will get you NO where near the coordinates for a geocache!) to find the nearest geocache.
It’s really THAT easy!!
well…sort of…
Here are some of our extra special hints and tips: charlotte family photographer
*When you get to a geocache someone right before you has probably written something like this in the logbook, “This was our 459th find today!” Don’t let it discourage you. We’ve found a grand total of 2 in one day. I don’t know who in the world finds 627 geocaches in a day. I’d like to shake their hand and tell them I’m fully impressed.
*Make sure you have a fourteen year old boy who always finds the geocache first, much to the chagrin of his sisters.
*Bring snacks…and water. If you’re super pros like us and take 2 hours to find one cache you’ll need sustenance.
*Micro caches are lame. Especially if you have kids. I mean, who hides a container and doesn’t put treasure in it? It’s fun to look for micro caches (if you’re an adult) but kids love to see what magical items might be inside.
*If you have to go back two or three times because it gets dark while you’re looking…just know, you’re not the only one! 🙂
*We went to the dollar store and bought some packages of insects toys, bouncy balls, etc. We keep them in a little backpack in our car in case the pirate in us suddenly emerges and we want to search out buried treasure.
*A geocache can be anywhere…a tree, a shrub, under a rock, up a tree, between two walls, lodged between bricks in a wall (those darn micro caches), etc. Each geocache in the app tells you how difficult it is to find. I suggest starting out with ‘easy’ to get a little feel for what you’re looking for.
*A geocache can also be in any container…the official geocache container, a peanut butter jar, a coffee can…one of the things that makes it a fun challenge.
*If you get stuck you can always register on geocache.com. That gives you access to seeing online when the cache you’re looking for was last found, if anyone has any specific hints, and if there are any seasonal changes for why it may be difficult to find. Sometimes people upload pictures, too. Those are very nice little hints!

We love Geocaching! We started taking our girls when they were about two and couldn’t even say “Adventure”. They called it going on a “bencher”. It is so fun and takes you to some interesting places! One of our favorites took us to an old freed slave cemetery we never know was so close by and also to the park where the first American Flag was flown, which ended up being a mile from our house! So fun!
Holy cool geocaching stories, batman!! And I can hear your girls saying “bencher”. Hilarious. Do you live in the south Amy? It sounds like you do! I want to go to the places you just listed.
